A Feed Read-huh?
What is all this talk about Feed Readers, or RSS, or Aggregators, or client-side readers, or…?
Feed Readers are the next best thing on the internet! They allow you to be notified of updates to your favourite websites without having to give out your email address, and without having the emails lost anyway because they get trapped in the spam filters. Feed Readers are programs that collect lists of the updated articles and posts and display them in an easy-to-read list. If you want to look at the entire article, then simply click on it and you are taken directly to that article on the website that it comes from.
Some definitions:
Feed Readers, Aggregators, client-side readers: all words meaning the same thing. The software that you use to get notified of the latest articles on your favourite websites.
RSS: Just a fancy term for the techno-wizardry behind the scenes that makes all of this possible. The letters stand for a bunch of different things, the most common one that you hear is “Really Simple Syndication”. You know, ’syndication’ like how a newspaper article can be syndicated to appear in many different newspapers. Not that you are probably running a newspaper. But, whatever, the name has stuck, anyway.
So how much does this cost?
Depending on which feed reader program you choose, it may cost a bit to download and install the program (but there are plenty of free ones, too, that do the job quite adequately). But once you have your feed reader program, it doesn’t cost anything to add a website to your list of feeds. And it doesn’t cost anything to remain subscribed. Just add your feed, and that’s it!
Won’t this mean I get lots of spam?
No! That’s one of the great things about feed readers! You never have to give out your email address, so you can browse completely anonymously. And if you don’t want to continue receiving updates from a particular website, simply remove their entry from your list of feeds in your feed reader, and that’s it. No more waiting for some list admin to remove your entry. No more “you may get a few more emails until this takes effect”. No more clicking on the ‘unsubscribe’ link and opening yourself up to tons of spam.
Like I said earlier - Feed Readers are the next best thing on the internet!
Ok, I want one! How do I get one?
There are hundreds of different options when you want to install a feed reader. Some are free, some cost a little. Some install on your computer, some run directly off the web. Some integrate with your email application, so you only need to look in one place.
About.com has a great article on how to Find the Best RSS Feed Readers / News Aggregators. I’d really recommend you have a quick scan of that.
Once you have installed your feed reader, then come back here and click on the “Subscribe” button - that will add a link to this website into your new feed reader. And that’s about it!
