Almost crashing on the rocks

I had a dream recently…

We were holidaying in a large yacht - it was the first night and we were tied up at a jetty. The next morning I was looking through the porthole and watching other yachts and ships going past - then one was sailing past quite close, but moving really slowly, and I thought, “Hang on, I think we are moving too!”. And I went up on deck and noticed that we were drifting along backwards, along the shoreline. And the shore consisted of a lot of rock shelves - some semi-submerged. And somehow we weren’t crashing into the rocks, even though it looked like we should be at any moment.

Then there was a very large ship sailing along next to us - about 50m out, and I knew that we had to make sure we didn’t crash into that either. It was so close that all I could see was the dark grey steel side stretching upwards - with no way that they could see us.

I tried spinning the wheel to steer us away from the rocks, but we were drifting, and going backwards, so I really didn’t have much control.

I woke up feeling that it was very symbolic.

We are about to head off on a journey, but we are not really sure what we are doing. And it seems that we are on the journey already - before we were ready to start. And we are out of control, and I am trying to do what I can to fix it, but my efforts are not really effective. But somehow we don’t crash, even though it looks like we should have already - we just keep going on and ‘just’ scraping through. Well, clearly, it is God who is keeping us afloat and off the rocks - even though multiple times it seems that there it is not humanly possible that we should get through, and yet we do each time.

I guess what we want is to have the sails up - or even at least the motor on to get us away from the rocks, and then sailing in the open sea. But we are trapped next to the shore by the large ship - an impersonal and unseeing force that stops us from getting out into the open water.

  1. […] On that note Tim had an interesting dream recently about us sleeping on a yacht about to set off on a great adventure the next day. When he woke he realised we were drifting and he could see lots of rocks in the water and somehow we were just passing over them instead of crashing into them, when we should have been crashing into them. Seems like we’re already on our great adventure even though we haven’t left yet! And God is looking after us, thank goodnes! Check out Tim’s post ‘Almost Crashing On The Rocks’. […]
